1. Insomnia (insomnia).

Insomnia is the most common sleep disorder and is characterized by problems falling asleep, sleeping through or waking up early without being able to fall back asleep.

  • Impact: Loss of control of the sleep-wake cycle, cataplexy (sudden loss of muscle tension), and sleep paralysis.

Treatment:

  • Medication to reduce drowsiness and control cataplexy.
  • Following a tight sleep schedule.

4. Parasomnias

Parasomnias are abnormal behaviors or experiences that occur during sleep. Some examples include:

  • Nightmares: Intense, anxious dreams that wake you up.
  • Nighttime panic attacks: Sudden awakening with anxiety and panic, usually with no apparent cause.
  • Sleepwalking: Automatic movements or activities during sleep.
  • Talking or sleep paralysis: You are awake but cannot move.
